Scottish Area Team Championship
The North East District are the Scottish Area Team Champions for 2022, after a tense couple of days at Powfoot, Dumfries from 2nd to 4th September.
North East were drawn against Borders in the first semi-final on Saturday and despite being 2 – 1 down after the morning foursomes they rallied in the afternoon to win the singles by 5 matches to 1 and thus earned a place in the final with an overall victory of 6 – 3. In the other semi-final Perth & Kinross beat Ayrshire 5.5 – 3.5. The final on Sunday saw North East lock horns with Perth & Kinross and they held a slender 2 – 1 lead going into the afternoon singles where Perth & Kinross pushed them all the way before the North East eventually won by 6 matches to 3, however that doesn’t tell the whole story as 4 of the matches went to the 18th and 1 to the 19th which shows how close it really was and the pressure both sets of players were under !
Many congratulations to the players who represented the North East at the finals weekend, Clark Brechin (Portlethen), Adam Dunton (McDonald), Gary Esson (Portlethen), Adam Giles (Newmachar), Neil Mitchell (Bon Accord) & David Morrison (Meldrum House) and also the following players who took part in the earlier rounds and played their part in the North East getting to the finals, Anthony Bews (Murcar Links), Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord), Mark Halliday (Deeside), Bryan Innes (Murcar Links) & Ben Murray (Portlethen). Of course these things don’t just happen without some careful planning on travel, kit, accommodation, meals etc and the officials who have accompanied the teams at Portlethen, Lanark, Rothesay and Powfoot during the season deserve a mention for their time and dedication, David Fleming (Team Captain), Mike Pocock, George Clark & secretary George M Young.
